Flying Fish airboat
[1930s]
Murl Emery settled with his family at Cottonwood Island in the Colorado River in 1914. Throughout the teens and '20's during government investigations into building a dam on the Colorado Emery carried federal, state, and local officials up and down the river with his boating service. During Hoover Dam construction Emery ferried workers to and from the damsite until roads and bridges could be built. He had a store at Williamsville, also known as Ragtown, and was involved in many enterprises on the Colorado River including mining, ferries, tour boats, and Emery's Landing, a fishing resort at the mouth of Eldorado Canyon, later known as Nelson's Landing. Emery, who died on March 17, 1981, received a great deal of publicity during his lifetime and was one of southern Nevada's most engaging characters. A short oral history conducted with Emery is in the Nevada Collection of the Boulder City Library.
The material in this manuscript collection deals with the Flying Fish, a flat-bottomed river-running boat Emery contrived to operate with an airplane engine. It proved a popular novelty for several years before Emery ceased running it.
