Scope and Content

Boulder City Cultural Center MS 21 Boulder City Cultural Center The Boulder City Cultural Center was conceived in late 1966 by a group of Boulder citizens including Al Bornhoft, R. Guild Gray, Harry Lattin, and Elton Garrett, who was their prime motivator. Their idea was to found an umbrella organization for the Boulder City Chamber of Commerce, the Boulder City Art Guild, a yet-to-be-organized Boulder City Museum, and to provide a venue for other cultural endeavors for the citizens of Boulder City. The Cultural Center was incorporated on April 15, 1968 [instrument no. 697255, Book 868, recorded April 25, 1968] and began raising money to construct a Cultural Center building. A formal Cultural Center never materialized as Elton Garrett and the others imagined, although the city sold land Tract 88 to the Center for $1 in December 1969. The Boulder City Chamber of Commerce obtained its own building on Tract 88 in 1974 when it built a dome structure at 1497 Nevada Highway [see the Boulder City News 1.1.74, 1:5-6 ("Chamber to Build Dome for New Home"); Boulder City News 6.13.74, 2:6 (groundbreaking for dome); Boulder City News 6.20.74, 3:4-7 (photo); Boulder City News 11.28.74, p. 7 ("C. C. Folk and Friends Nail 'Skin" [photo; building the Chamber of Commerce dome] )]. In 1980 the Boulder City Art Guild/Cultural Center moved into the former Sproul Homes sales office which had been moved from 833 Nevada Highway to 1495 Nevada Highway next to the Chamber of Commerce dome [see Boulder City News 5.2.63, 1:1-4 (photo: "Sproul Homes Sales Manager") and Boulder City News 2.19.81, p. 14 ("Cultural Center Gets Building Next to Chamber of Commerce"); Boulder City News 12.4.80, p. 11 ("Cultural Center" [grand opening in building next to Chamber of Commerce dome on Nevada Highway on 12.14.80] )]. Meanwhile, the Boulder City Museum and Historical Association was formed in 1980, began raising money for a museum building of its own, and in 1988 moved into a temporary storefront at 444 Hotel Plaza [see the Las Vegas Review-Journal 2.5.67, p. 17 ("Museum Gets a Name: B. C. Cultural Center"); Boulder City News 5.8.80, p. 5 ("Boulder City's Own Historical Society Being Formed"); Boulder City News 3.19.81, 31 ("Making Money to Build a Museum in Frank T. Crowe Park"); Boulder City News 9.8.88, p. 6 ("Boulder City/Hoover Dam Museum Under Construction"); Boulder City News 9.15.88, p. 12 ("Date Set for BC/Hoover Dam Museum Opening"); Boulder City News 9.22.88, 9:4-6 ("Boulder City/Hoover Dam Museum Opening Sept. 30"); Boulder City News 9.29.88, p. 3 ("Boulder City/Hoover Dam Museum Set to Open Sept. 30"); Boulder City News 10.6.88, p. 36 ("Boulder City Museum Opens and Town is Delighted," by Teddy Fenton); Boulder City News 1.21.93, 9A ("The Boulder City Museum Was Born in Ack's Attic in 1980," by Teddy Fenton)]. It wasn't until 1993 that Elton Garrett's dream finally came true. The fragments of the former Boulder City Cultural Center combined to form the Boulder Dam Hotel Association, Inc. which bought the Boulder Dam Hotel and remodeled it into space for the Boulder City/Hoover Dam Museum, the Chamber of Commerce, and the Boulder City Arts Council. More information on the Boulder City Cultural Center may be found in the Elton and Madelaine Garrett Papers [MS 7]. * * *
