Boulder City Hospital
The Boulder City Hospital opened on November 15, 1931 as the Six Companies Hospital, operated by the contractor who built Hoover Dam. When the dam was finished in 1935 Six Companies closed the hospital and Boulder citizens needing hospital care had to drive into Las Vegas. The National Park Service took over the old hospital building in 1938 for use as a museum and headquarters, but left it in 1941. In 1943 the U. S. Health Service re-opened the Boulder City Hospital and operated it until 1949 when the Bureau of Reclamation assumed control. By 1954 the hospital operation was losing money and the Bureau ordered it closed unless the citizens of Boulder City could come up with $15,000 to run the operation themselves. On February 25, 1954 citizens mounted a "Save the Hospital" campaign and had raised enough money by March 18 to operate the hospital.
A new hospital opened on Adams Boulevard on December 8, 1973 and in 1976 the Episcopalian Sisters of Charity bought the old Six Companies hospital building as a retreat house, which was dedicated on April 5, 1981. On April 1, 1982 the building was listed on the National register of Historic Places.
Among fund-raising efforts the Boulder City Hospital has pursued through the years the most famous is the Boulder City Hospital Auxiliary's Art-in-the-Park festival held each fall. Established in 1963, Art-in-the-Park has grown into one of the premier arts events in the Southwest.
