Scope and Content

William J. "Bill" and Marguerite Williams Papers MS 25 William J. "Bill" and Marguerite Williams Papers Bill Williams [February 26, 1916 - February 18, 1995] and his wife, Marguerite, came to Boulder City in 1945 where Bill worked as the Bureau of Reclamation's public relations officer for 34 years, retiring in 1980. While Williams' background was in newspaper journalism, he wrote short fiction and radio plays, and composed songs and poems. It was through Bill's talent for musical composition that Mr. and Mrs. Williams met famed American composer Ferde Grofé [Grand Canyon Suite, Valley of the Sun Suite]. Grofé enlisted Williams' help in composing the "Theme of Gratitude" for the Valley of the Sun Suite, first performed at the 21st annual Masque of the Yellow Moon in Phoenix, Arizona, on May 2-3, 1952 as part of the 50th anniversary celebration of the founding of the U. S. Bureau of Reclamation. The Williams' friendship with Grofé was so deep they made the composer godfather of their third child, John Ferde, whom they also named after Grofé. While Williams' efforts at fiction and composing never achieved the success he hoped, it was through his association with the Bureau of Reclamation that his work has achieved a historical importance. In 1951 Williams was recognized for writing and producing the documentary film, Corralling the Colorado, which detailed the government's reclamation efforts on the Colorado River. The speeches Williams wrote for his bosses today preserve a number of historic events involving Bureau of Reclamation work in Boulder City and the southwest during the 1940s, 50s, and 70s. The Williams collection includes not only many of Williams' fiction and nonfiction manuscripts and musical pieces, but copies of the speeches he wrote as the Bureau of Reclamation's public information officer in the 1940s - 1970s. The collection also includes correspondence with Ferde Grofé, as well as phonograph recordings of Grofé's music. * * *
