Scope and Content

Elbert and Mary Edwards Collection MS 28 Elbert and Mary Edwards Collection Elbert Edwards [1907-1989] and Mary Reid Edwards [b. 1912] were from pioneer Nevada Mormon families. Edwards was an educator and a respected historian who came into Las Vegas from Panaca in 1929. He worked briefly on the construction of Hoover Dam before taking a position in the Nevada State Department of Education, eventually serving as Boulder City's chief school administrator from 1940 till 1963. In 1964 he ran a failed campaign for the Nevada State Assembly. Edwards is best known, however, for his research and publications, the most successful of which is "200 Years in Nevada" [Salt Lake City, Utah: Publishers Press, 1978], which was originally serialized in the Las Vegas Review-Journal in 1975-76. Mary Edwards was active in the LDS church both in Las Vegas and Boulder City and has contributed immensely to the preservation of Nevada history through the genealogies and family histories she's compiled and edited. * * *
