Sex and Erotica, 1930s - 1940s MS 106 Sex and Erotica, 1930s - 1940s The material in this collection provides a glimpse into the sexual aspects of social history, and includes erotic photographs and drawings, publications, novelty items, and condoms and "ticklers," worn by men during sexual intercourse to enhance sensation for their partner. Notable in this collection are the Tijuana Bibles, small, pocket-sized [and easily hidden] editions of pornographic cartoons. Tijuana Bibles are so named because many of them were published just over the Mexican border in Tijuana because publication and distribution of such material was illegal in the United States. Tijuana Bibles frequently involved erotic and obscene stories and drawings of popular film stars, celebrities, and cartoon characters. For instance, the titles, "Wally in the Bath" and "Wally and the King" in this collection depict Wallace Warfield Simpson and Edward VIII of England, whose love affair during the mid-1930s led to Edward’s abdication of the throne. Several of the Bibles in MS 106 are especially unique because they are hand-drawn, "amateur" efforts.
