Ella Mansor Bell Papers
Ella F. Bell was born on July 28, 1917, in St. George, Utah and passed away on April 28, 2002, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Shortly after her birth, her family, which included two brothers and a sister, relocated to St. Thomas, Nevada, now submerged under Lake Mead. In 1923, they moved to Las Vegas, where Ella completed all her education. In 1946, Ella settled in Boulder City, feeling overwhelmed by the growth of Las Vegas. Ella began her career at the Bureau of Reclamation as a Cash Accounting Clerk at Hoover Dam in 1949. Over the years, she advanced from Clerk Cashier to General Clerk for the Guide Service, ultimately becoming the first and only female Guide at Hoover Dam in July 1947. Ella was married twice, first to LaVar Manson, who passed away in 1949, and later to Kenneth D. Bell, who died in 1988.
Ella’s collection includes an address book with notes on individuals’ eye and hair color, height, and weight, along with her reflections on her time at Hoover Dam and various poems.Collection
