Scope and Content

Saul L. "Red" and Catherine Wixson Papers MS 34 Saul L. "Red" and Catherine Wixson Papers Saul L. "Red" Wixson many years ago assumed responsibility for keeping the memory of Frank Crowe alive and his admiration of the man has often been noted as hero worship. Crowe was the Six Companies construction superintendent on the Boulder Canyon Project, although his association with both private construction companies and the federal government in dam-building projects began in the early part of the 20th century. Crowe gave Wixson his first job when Wixson was only 16 years old. Wixson followed Crowe from job to job and came to southern Nevada in 1931 to build Hoover Dam. The two moved on afterward to Parker Dam in Arizona/California and then to Shasta Dam near Redding, California where they settled. Crowe bankrolled Wixson's construction company which Wixson operated into the 1970s. Red and his wife Catherine [1909-1994] retired to Boulder City and in 1980 bought the former Los Angeles Department of Water and Power Park for $74,000 and donated it to Boulder City as the Frank T. Crowe Memorial Park. This collection of papers includes 1920s correspondence between Crowe and Harry Morrison of the Morrison-Knudsen construction company; a hand-written short story by Crowe; and materials relative to the purchase and dedication of Frank T. Crowe Memorial park. * * *
