Scope and Content

Therese Courture Thomas Collection MS 40 Therese Courture Thomas Collection [scrapbooks] The scrapbooks in this collection were compiled by Therese Courture Thomas's sister, Nina June. The Courture family came to Boulder City in the early 1930s where their father, Ernest Ambrose, was involved in construction of Hoover Dam. Like many people during the construction period, Nina June collected a great variety of printed material relative to dam construction, which she pasted in her scrapbooks. This material included not only newspaper articles and illustrations, but postcards, advertisements, magazine articles, fliers and brochures, tickets, programs, advertising cards, and decals. Nina June's scrapbooks cover a wide range of subjects: Hoover Dam and Boulder City construction, Lake Mead, Las Vegas, the Colorado River, Los Angeles, tourists and tourism, power production—even construction of Glen Canyon Dam in the 1950s. Because scrapbooks were cheaply made of highly acidic paper, the pages have become extremely brittle. Due to the fragility of these items, the public may use only the copies made on acid-free paper, contained in box 1 of the collection, unless special arrangements are made. * * *
