Boulder Canyon Cement Company
Limestone and dolomite deposits were first discovered at Sloan, Nevada--19 miles south of Las Vegas along US Highway 91--in 1910. By 1912, the deposits were being worked extensively to provide lime for the cyanide plants of Goldfield and Tonopah, while throughout the 1920s and ‘30s, the operation provided lime and dolomite to steel plants and sugar refineries, principally in southern California. The dolomite, in fact, was sold under the brand name, "Boulder Canyon." The deposits and quarry at Sloan were originally owned by Las Vegas businessman Peter Buol, dba the Nevada Lime and Rock Company. Buol sold in 1925 to Con McCabe & Company of Los Angeles, who in turn sold to the U. S. Lime Products Company division of the Flintkote Company in 1927. By 1945, it was no longer profitable to quarry limestone at Sloan because of the heavy dolomite overburden and because the limestone itself was becoming degraded. That year U. S. Lime Products opened a quarry at Apex, 18 miles northeast of Las Vegas off U. S. Highway 91, and shipped the raw materials down to the operation at Sloan. This expensive shipping arrangement lasted only until 1948, when the company moved the processing operation and all its personnel to Apex, abandoning the town of Sloan.
The focus of this collection is an investors’ prospectus compiled in 1929 by San Francisco consulting engineer F. S. Richards. Illustrated with photographs of the operations at Sloan and of the Colorado River near the Hoover Dam site, the prospectus suggests that the government might buy the cement it needed for dam construction from U. S. Lime Products, which would provide a great return for investors. As it happened, however, Sloan couldn’t provide the kind of cement the government wanted for Hoover Dam, and most of what was used came from four plants in southern California and a mill in Utah.
The collection also includes news articles about the town of Sloan, the mining and processing operations there, and information on the mining district itself, 1914-84.
