Boulder Dam Challenge
Elton Garrett played a pivotal role in documenting the early days of Boulder City, which would become his home. He began his journalism career in 1929 with the Las Vegas Evening Review-Journal and, two years later, became the managing editor and sole reporter for the Boulder City Journal, a branch of the Review-Journal. Through his column, “Nuggets of Boulder Color,” Garrett shared the stories of everyday workers involved in the construction of one of the world’s engineering marvels, reflecting a significant era for both Nevada and the nation. His journalism career spanned until 1942, during which time he also embarked on a second career starting in 1932 as a teacher, later becoming the principal of Boulder City’s only school at the time.
Additionally, this collection includes his work with the ‘Boulder Dam Challenge,’ the first privately owned newspaper in the area, which had a circulation of about 1,200 copies delivered by paperboys throughout Boulder City, Nevada.Collection
