Scope and Content

Vernon Homme Papers MS 127 Vernon Homme Papers Vernon and Elizabeth Homme moved to Boulder City in 1942 where Mr. Homme worked as a research metallurgist for the U. S. Bureau of Mines. The couple eventually had four children: Frank Carl, Harry, Carolyn, and Judith. The family lived in a little Bureau of Mines duplex at 529 Date Street--but in 1946, Homme designed and began building a large house at 701 California Avenue. While the Hommes moved into their new house on January 5, 1949, construction and finishing went on through December 1956. The home itself resembles the Arts and Crafts style popular in the early 20th century. Indeed, many of the building's most characteristic features were hand-crafted by Homme himself. These include the chimney on the north side of the house, cut from stone hauled from what is now the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area; the living room fireplace made of green serpentine from New Mexico; and the pecan wood floors. Vernon and Elizabeth Homme sold their dream home in 1969 and left Boulder City for Prescott, Arizona. Homme died in 1984, and his wife, Elizabeth, in 2001. The material in this collection includes copies of photographs detailing construction progress on the house and detailed ledger entries describing building materials and their cost. * * *
