Scope and Content

Reuben J. and Margaret "Mamie" Gard Collection MS 46 Reuben J. and Margaret "Mamie" Gard Collection Among all the scrapbooks in the museum's collection this one compiled by Margaret Gard is perhaps the most important by virtue of the rare ephemera and one-of-a-kind photographs she included in its pages. Mrs. Gard, for instance, collected tourist decals from Hoover Dam between 1931 and 1936 which reflect not only the dam's subtly changing design during those years, but the structure's changing name as well. Among the photographs Mamie saved are the only known photos of the auto camp near the Railroad Pass Casino and the auto camp at Jean, Nevada, with its natural rock architecture and unusual stucco cabins. Little of these buildings remain today. In addition, the Gards lived in Boulder City in 1934-35 in what were known as the Olympic Houses: small, portable one-room buildings moved to Boulder City from the 1932 Olympic Village in Los Angeles to provide badly needed housing for Hoover Dam workers—the scrapbook contains several photos of these houses in Boulder City before they were altered and ultimately destroyed. Also, the photograph of the Gards posed in 1931 front of their Ragtown tent house is a fascinating depiction of life at the Hoover dam site before Boulder City was built. Many of these photographs have been copied and are stored separately in the Reuben and Mamie Gard photo collection. There are many other items of ephemera in Mr. and Mrs. Gard's scrapbook which do not exist in any Nevada archive. Unfortunately, aside from clues to their life as recorded in the scrapbook, nothing more is known about Reuben and Mamie Gard. * * *
