Scope and Content

Lloyd and Roberta Hudlow Papers MS 50 Lloyd and Roberta Hudlow Papers Lloyd Hudlow [August 6, 1907 - June 15, 1987] came to Boulder City in March 1933 as a surveyor for the Bureau of Reclamation on the Hoover Dam project. On June 1, 1934, Hudlow married Roberta O'Rourke [b. February 29, 1908], a teacher at Las Vegas High School. The couple had two children—Grant Barclay and Joanne. Hudlow rose through the administrative ranks of the Bureau of Reclamation in Boulder City, becoming the Assistant Director of Power in 1948 under Carlo P. Christensen, and then L. R. Douglass. In 1954 Hudlow took Douglass's place as the Boulder Canyon Project Engineer—a Bureau reorganization shortly before had abolished the Director of Power title. Hudlow's responsibilities included not only the daily operation and maintenance of Hoover Dam, but he was often called upon to serve as greeter and host to prominent visitors on the Boulder Canyon Project. Roberta Hudlow was very active in Boulder City's social and civic affairs. With a university background in physical education, Mrs. Hudlow had worked with the Boulder City recreation department since 1938. She was also a charter member of the Southern Nevada Branch of the American Association of University Women. On June 6, 1954, Roberta was named Field Director of the Frontier Area Girl Scout Council, an organization she had worked with since 1943—she had been one of the founders of the Foxtail Canyon Girl Scout Camp at Mt. Charleston. Diagnosed with cancer, Mrs. Hudlow died in an automobile accident near Railroad Pass on June 2, 1955, an accident many felt was suicide. On September 2, 1955, Boulder City's Polka Dot Haven teenage club dedicated a skating rink in Central Park, a project Roberta had been working on when she died. On July 5, 1959, the Foxtail Canyon Girl Scout Camp dedicated Hudlow Hall in Roberta's memory. Lloyd Hudlow married a second time on September 3, 1960. His bride was Florence "Flossie" Hendrickson Wadsworth Flury, who had come to Boulder City in 1936. Flossie had two daughters from a marriage to Boulder City pioneer Bert Wadsworth—Linda and Bette [Linda later married Brian Fox, son of Rev. Earl Fox, who married her mother and Lloyd Hudlow in Grace Community Church]. Florence divorced Wadsworth shortly after he returned from service in World War II, and married Ben Flury, who died in 1953. Hudlow ended his 31-year career with the Bureau of Reclamation by directing installation of the 17th and last power generator at Hoover Dam, known as N-8, in 1962. After retiring in 1963, he and Florence traveled extensively. Florence died on March 14, 1978, Lloyd on June 15, 1987. Florence, Lloyd, and Roberta Hudlow are all buried at the Boulder City Cemetery. The material in this collection includes personal papers of Lloyd and Roberta and their two children, Grant and Joanne. Photo collection 0100, the Lloyd and Roberta Hudlow Collection, contains several dozen images from their personal and professional lives. * * *
