Scope and Content

Parker Dam and Colorado River Aqueduct MS 140 Parker Dam and Colorado River Aqueduct Parker Dam, built by the U. S. Bureau of Reclamation in 1937-38 with funds advanced by the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, was primarily meant to provide a forebay and desilting basin for the Colorado River Aqueduct. The aqueduct pumps water from Lake Havasu, the reservoir created by Parker Dam, through a 242-mile-long pipeline to Los Angeles and San Diego. Parker also generates power for southern California and Arizona. The material in this collection includes a report by geologist F. L. Ransome on the geology of the aqueduct tunnels driven through the Whipple Mountains; and correspondence from "Special Agent" F. O. Martin to the commissioner of the General Land Office describing his, Martin’s, examination of lands that were to be affected by construction of Parker Dam, the Colorado River Aqueduct, and flooding of the reservoir basin. The 22 maps which accompanied Martin’s reports are stored separately in the map collection. * * *
