MS 55 Wilbur W. Weed Papers [Box 1 of 1] Wilbur Wynn Weed arrived in Boulder City in 1931 as the Bureau of Reclamation's chief landscape gardener. It was Weed's job to design and plant the landscaping in the government areas of Boulder City. While the Six Companies' landscape architect, Justin F. Barber had landscaped the contractor's parts of town with cactus and rocks, Weed's designs included lush lawns, tree-lined streets, and flower gardens. Weed graduated in 1921 from Oregon Agricultural College with a degree in landscape architecture and worked with his father's company, Weed's Landscape, for ten years in Beaverton, Oregon. Between 1931 and 1941 Weed worked for the Bureau of Reclamation on landscaping projects in Boulder City, at Parker Dam, in California's Central Valley Project, and at Shasta Dam, as well as on side projects such as the landscape plan around Las Vegas's War Memorial Building. He joined the University of Oregon in 1951 as a nurseryman, and retired in 1966 as superintendent of the physical plant. Weed died on September 2, 1976. Among Weed's publications relative to his work in Boulder City is "Plant Behavior in Drought" [Reclamation Era (November 1937), pp. 260-263]. The item in Weed's manuscript collection is a portfolio of photographs detailing how the landscaping designed and planted by Weed around Boulder City's Bureau of Reclamation Administration Building in 1932 had matured by October 1937.
