Scope and Content

Weinkauf-Frady Collection MS 57 Weinkauf-Frady Collection Steve Frady served as Nevada's Deputy State Fire Marshall, and later in a similar capacity for the state's Division of Forestry and the Sierra Front of the Wildfire Cooperators of California and Nevada. Frady's interest in fire fighting and prevention led him to rescue the original Bureau of Reclamation fire truck from a trash heap in Tonopah in 1987, and to restore it as a project of an organization he named That Dam Engine Company. The restored truck debuted at the Damboree celebration in Boulder City on July 4, 1990. James Weinkauf grew up in Boulder City where his father, Charles Weinkauf, was fiscal agent for the Boulder Canyon Project from 1930 until his retirement in 1948 [see the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Sunday, June 13, 1948, 7:1-2]. The material in this collection includes correspondence between Frady and historian Dennis McBride relative to the restoration project, news articles on the history of fires and fire-fighting in Boulder City, as well as newsletters from That Dam Engine Company.
