Nevada Test Site
1951 - 1967
In December 1950 the Atomic Energy Commission [AEC] dedicated a portion of the Las Vegas Bombing and Gunnery Range at Frenchman and Yucca Flats in central Nevada, eventually totaling more than 1,300 square miles, to test nuclear weapons. From 1951 through 1962 these bombs were detonated above ground. People from Boulder City, when pre-dawn tests were scheduled, drove out to Railroad Pass and parked their cars where they could watch the flash and glow of these atmospheric tests nearly a hundred miles away. The Boulder City News joined the popular atomic culture by adding to its front page the phrase, "In the Area the Atomic Jolt Makes Famous." The first blast at the Test Site occurred before dawn on January 27, 1951 and the News published a "Special Atom Bomb Edition" on February 2, describing the blast's effects on Boulder City and its citizens. The clippings and tear sheets in this collection detail Nevada Test Site operations from 1951 through 1967.
