Carl, Bessie, and Mary Ellen Butin Collection MS 65 Carl, Bessie, and Mary Ellen Butin Collection Carl Butin came to Boulder City in 1932 with his wife, Bessie, and daughter Mary Ellen, to work for the Babcock & Wilcox Company, the contractor who manufactured and installed the penstock pipes in Hoover Dam. The family lived in a Babcock & Wilcox Company employee house at 441 Avenue C [Hotel Plaza]. When the Babcock & Wilcox block was cleared in 1986-87 to make way for a new Boulder City post office, 441 was moved to the Clark County Museum in Henderson, Nevada, and restored. The Butins remained in Boulder City until 1936 when they returned to Akron, Ohio. The material in this collection includes Butin's Babcock and Wilcox Company employee badge, a whetstone he used in his work, and a ceramic mug with a Las Vegas theme crafted by Bessie, who was an accomplished ceramist.
