Arleigh Meredith Beals Papers
Arleigh Meredith Beals worked for Six companies, as a power shovel operator. In 1931 he contributed to the construction of the Hoover Dam and lived in tent camps in Williamsville and along the Colorado River. Born on January 29, 1907 in Erie, Pennsylvania, he passed away on November 9, 1955.
This collection features letters Arleigh wrote to his fiancée, Marion Riblet, who resided in Harbor Creek, Pennsylvania.
He drove 840 miles, arriving in Boulder City on March 31, 1931, and started his work on the Hoover Dam the following day. The letters span from March to May 1931. Accompanying him on his journey from Erie were his brother-in-law, John Gates Riblet, a steam shovel oiler, and William "Bill” Williams, a cook and friend. One letter included in the collection is from Bill to his family.Collection
