Scope and Content

Jeanne Harshman Collection MS 69 Jeanne Harshman Collection Jeanne Harshman [then Clark] and her husband, Harry Clark, moved to Boulder City from Columbus, Ohio in 1971. In addition to serving as vice president of her husband's business, the Clark Machine Tool Company, Jeanne was active in some of Boulder City's most important social and cultural institutions and activities. Trained in drama, voice, and dance, Mrs. Clark was a founding director in 1972 of the Boulder City First Nighters, an amateur theatre company which, as the Boulder City Little Theatre, had been inactive for several years. Jeanne also served as co-director of the Boulder City American Revolution Bicentennial Committee in 1975-76 and was instrumental in having the park behind city hall renamed Bicentennial Park. The Bicentennial Gazebo and band stand in this park was designed by Jeanne's husband, Harry, and was built with money raised by the Bicentennial Committee. The Bicentennial celebration Jeanne helped produce was a year-long series of parades, pageants, fund raisers, and ceremonies. The committee minted a Bicentennial medallion and buried a time capsule in the cornerstone of the Desert Research Institute building in Boulder City. The celebrations ended on October 26, 1976 with a commemoration of the 40th anniversary of Hoover Dam power production. Mrs. Clark went on to serve as the 1977 chairperson of the Boulder City Hospital Auxiliary's Art-in-the-Park festival; as community liaison for the Meadows Playhouse in Las Vegas in 1977-78; and as director of the Cultural Focus division of the Allied Arts Council of southern Nevada. Jeanne divorced Harry Clark in 1979, remarried her children's father, Ray Harshman, in 1987, and moved to Utah in 1990. The material in the Harshman Collection includes correspondence, financial records, ephemera, and news clippings from Boulder City's Bicentennial celebrations, as well as programs and ephemera from Boulder City First Nighters productions in the 1970s. Also included in the collection are patterns for the Bicentennial quilt designed and sewn by the Boulder City Welcome Wagon as a fund raiser for Bicentennial events. This material was donated to the Boulder City Museum and Historical Association by Dottie Lowe [acc. no. 997.43.89]. Mrs. Harshman returned to Boulder City on May 22, 2000 to organize a 25th anniversary reunion of the Boulder City Bicentennial Committee for the 2000 Damboree celebration. As part of the reunion, the 1976 time capsule was retrieved and opened on July 4, 2000, and its contents donated to the Boulder City Museum and Historical Association as part of the Harshman Collection. * * *
