Arleigh West Papers MS 70 Arleigh West Papers With his wife, Eleanor, and sons John and Richard, Arleigh Burton West [July 8, 1910 - October 7, 1994] came to Boulder City in October 1944 to work as assistant to the Bureau of Reclamation's Regional Director. In December 1945 he was promoted to Regional Supervisor of Irrigation, a position he held until named acting Regional Director in October 1959 when Wade Taylor was transferred from Boulder City. In 1960 he was named Regional Director. As Regional Director of the Bureau of Reclamation's Region III in Boulder City, West's responsibilities included overseeing and coordinating the Bureau's water projects throughout the Southwest. He was instrumental in legislation authorizing the Central Arizona Project, involved in the planning, design, and construction of the Southern Nevada Water Project, and administered the agreement between the United States and Mexico relative to delivery of Colorado River water at the international border. West was the first post-incorporation regional director in Boulder City, and the last to be an active force in the social and political life of the town. He was involved in many of the city's social and fraternal organizations including the Boulder City Rotary Club, the PTA, Boy Scouts, and the Grace Community Church. On June 7, 1971, West was awarded a citation for distinguished service by the Department of the Interior. West's collection is very large and consists mostly of Bureau of Reclamation publications and reports which are stored with the catalogued books collection. The material in MS 70 includes budget estimates and related documents for the Bureau's water projects in the Southwest during Fiscal Year 1972, as well as files from West's contentious involvement with the Urban Action Committee, established by Clark County in 1973 to study Las Vegas and Clark County consolidation. * * *
