Scope and Content

Boulder City Little Theatre/First Nighters MS 73 Boulder City Little Theatre/First Nighters The Boulder City Little Theatre originated in the Boulder City Civic Music and Drama Committee established early in 1943 to present Boulder's first annual May Festival. During the week of May 12-15, the community presented public performances of music and dance, as well as art exhibitions. On April 15, 1944, a group of people associated with the May Festival, led by Helen Hammond, met in the auditorium of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power building to discuss founding a legitimate community theatre group, and the Boulder City Little Theatre was born. Their first production was East Lynne, performed at the 1944 May Festival on May 11. When Camp Williston, an army camp on the south edge of Boulder City, was abandoned after the war, the Boulder City Little Theatre leased the old Post Theatre. When that building was sold and torn down in 1959, the group eventually moved into the Memorial Building adjacent to the high school on Fifth Street, then known as the Multipurpose Building. The Boulder City Little Theatre's last performance was "Anniversary Waltz," performed July 20-22, 1967 as a fund raiser for the Boulder City Cultural Center. In 1972 Jeanne Clark [Harshman] revived the theatre group and re-named it the Boulder First Nighters, whose first performance was "You Can't Take It With You," presented on November 2-4, 1972. The First Nighters performed until about 1986 when the group died what seems to be a final death. The material in MS 73 includes programs, scripts, and news clippings about performances from 1945 - 1986. Another collection which deals with both the First Nighters and the Boulder City Little Theatre is MS 69 [Jeanne Harshman Collection].
