Hoover Dam Penny Power Project
The Hoover Dam Penny Power Project was conceived by Boulder City businessman Kae Pohe as part of the dam’s 50th anniversary celebrations. The penny-laying project was an attempt to break the world record, and it was successful: on 21 September 1985 over 850 volunteers laid 1,978,414 pennies end-to-end. The event received world-wide attention and won a place in the Guinness Book of World Records. The project also served as a fundraiser for the Boulder City Museum and Historical Association.
