Interior Department Appropriation Bill for 1949 MS 100 Interior Department Appropriation Bill For 1949: Hearings [1948] Before Boulder City was incorporated in 1959, it was owned and operated by the federal government through the U. S. Bureau of Reclamation. The town’s operation and maintenance required appropriations from the Department of the Interior, the hearings for which were often contentious. MS 100 contains the 1948 record of hearings for the proposed 1949 Interior Department appropriation bill. 1949 was a fateful year for Boulder City--that was the year the government hired Dr. Henry Reining to conduct the public hearings in Boulder City which led to the town’s incorporation 10 years later. Of particular interest in MS 100 is the testimony from Elbert Edwards, superintendent of Boulder City Schools, for money to upgrade the town’s educational facilities [pp. 1954-1966]. The photographs Edwards commissioned to convince Interior authorities that Boulder City schools were overcrowded may be found in the Edwards photo collection, no. 0042. In addition to hearings on Boulder City’s appropriation, there are hearings on appropriations for other Boulder Canyon Project facilities such as the All-American Canal, and for other Lake Mead and Colorado River operations. * * *Collection
