While engaged with my french master / a letter was laid before me in the hand-writing of my / dear Papa, need I say [inserted: with] what pleasure I broke the seal to / read once more an assurance of your unabated affection / I anticipate Our correspondence this winter be very pleasing to me / and I have no doubt I shall improve in letter writing that is, if it is/ true that “practice makes perfect-” I intend writing to Mrs. Cuth - / bert and some of my Montreal friends- I am now writing / by candlelight, with a bad pen & [Aurore] & Matilda keep / such a talking that I cannot write at all _ Aurore / says you know better than to think she talks so much- / Matilda says she will not write to you, for she is offended / at not receiving a letter from you-
Madame Grelaud sends her compliments to you & Mamma / she says she wrote to Mr. Livingston, but she does not know / if he has received her letter- /
You mistake about her giving Matilda B[unrecovered] a week, she gets her every thing she wants, but she does not me, I wish / you would write to her to do it- I do not wish and unnecessary / but I have not any money to pay for the things I want- / I had five dollar when I left home which I gave for a hat /

You sent me fifteen, I gave two dollars for a pair of shoes, I / was measured to day for a pair of cork soled boots & I do / not know how much they will cost- I got a red frock / which cost three dollars- and the mantua maker has / made me the red frock with a pair of corsets, I have / not paid her yet, and do not know how much it is- / Mamma have me leave to have hair put to my / bracelets & necklace which I am getting done- so you / see I have not bought an unnecessary thing & yet my / 15 Dollars will be gone-
