[crossed out] September 14th/ 1806/ New York I have been thinking of you my dear father ever since/ you left us- What a dismal time you must have had- We were/ almost in hopes that you would return- The house looks melan-/ -choly since your departure & Beppy calls in vain for her dear/ Papa- We all dined at Uncle Seton’s the day you left us,/ & to-day Grandmama dined with us- I speak of the day/ you left us as if were a long time, but I assure you it/ has seemed an age since I saw you & when I think it was/ but yesterday I am inclined to [∧ suppose] there certainly has/ been two days thrown into one, for the last one has/ been so immoderately long- I do not set down to write/ you any news, for [crossed out] nothing has occurred since your depar-/ -ture & if there had I am almost too sleepy now to tell/ it- All the family have gone to bed except Betsy A- / & myself- We are seated in your study & both wri-/ -ting to our fathers- Altho hers may be the longer letter/ I am sure it wont be the mote affectionate- Mamma/ has written to you, so you will forgive me dear father/ for this sleepy scrawl- I only write to [crossed out] show you that my/ thoughts have been in an Albany floor ever since your departure/ & that God may ever bless keep & preserve you is the constant prayer/ of your child/ A-A-H [END OF PAGE 1] [Add On]I will write you my dear father in a few days/ When you read this consider how early I go to bed and it/ is now near 11 o clock, so I am sure you will pardon it/ Good night- may you ever rest well & sometimes dream/ of your ever affectionate/ Alice [END OF PAGE 2] [Address; written on letter] Josiah Ogden Hoffman Esqr/Albany [Postmark]New York, Sept 15 [END OF LETTER]
