My dear Grandfather/
I would have written to you before,/ but I have to study hard, that it requires nearly all of my./ I hung up my stocking but unfortunately it was empty, but I had/ a present from cousin Fanny C. Tell Matilda that I suspect she has/ entirely forgotten Rollo, for she has never spoken of him, tho I suppose/ she is too gay to think of [trag’y.] I study very hard and shall try to improve/ myself. I study French Elocution Geography Grammar History Rhetoric/ Arithmetic. I learnt drawing the first quarter, but Mother thought/ I did not improve so I gave it up, which was very sorry to do for/ I have so much to do that I cannot draw at home, but I hope I/ shall have some other opportunity to learn. I suppose Julia knows a great/ deal tell her I wish she would draw me something. give my love to/ [unrecovered]hot and ask him if he remembers me, if he does not he is an unthankful/ beast. Give my very best love to Julia and tell her I wish she would/ write to me. Give my [inserted: best] love to Matilda and tell her I am very happy/ but not as gay as she is. Give love to Charles and remember me/
