My dear Mrs Nicholas,
I yesterday received from Mr Raymond of / Chicago the deed of confirmation executed by Emma _ / the acknowledgement of which as you will see by the [duly joined] / copy of my son John’s note to Mr. S. Nicholas, is insufficient. / I now enclose a duplicate of the Deed, with the proper form / of acknowledgement, directions in regard to which are given / in John's note. / Without waiting however for the / return of the paper, Mr. Nicholas has just now handed / me the enclosed certificates of deposit, inclosed to Miss / Emma’s order for the $2000_ + 18 months interest ($180.) / less $10 which Mr. N. deducts as the par of [inserted: the] Law fee which / ought to fall on you. _ viz. 3 Certifs of 500 + 1500
1 of 670 670. 2170.
strictly speaking he was not [inserted: bound] to pay interest over the 10 of Oct. / when Emma was of age, + the money was ready _ he however / throws in a few weeks as a rounding of time.
With love from my wife + mine to the young Lady / + to Mr + Mrs Whitman, I am your sincere friend /

Dear Sir
Enclosed I return you the deed of / Confirmation executed by Miss Emma Nicholas on the / 13 Inst. The acknowledgement being insufficient I / have drafted + now enclose a duplicate of the deed / with a proper Certificate of acknowledgement subjoined to / it. The new Acknowledgm’t should be taken if possible / before a chief Justice or other Judge or Justice of the / Supreme Ct. of the State of Illinois under his hand + the / Seal of his Court _ if such Officer cannot be had, it / should be taken before a Judge of a Court of Common Pleas / certified under his hand + the seal of his Court _ An Acknow’t / before a Judge of a Circuit Court for a county will not answer / unless the Circuit Ct. is a Court of Common Pleas which / in that case ought to be expressly stated in the Certificate / an Ackn’: before the Clerk of a Court such as is annexed to / the Deed forwarded to you will not answer; altho’ if the / Acknowledgm’t be taken before + signed by a Judge as above / the Seal of the Court may be annexed by the Clerk with the / Clerk’s Certif. that the party signing was a Judge of the Court / to whose Acts full faith + credit should be given. / But the simpler form is the One which I have drafted. / If there be no Judge at hand the Acknowledgm’t may be / made before the Mayor of a City Certified under his hand + the seal of the City
Resp’y + Sincerely Dr. Sir
