[PAGE 1]
Dear Mrs Nicholas,/
Your medicine unlike/ others will be pleasant instead of/ repulsive because prescribed by affection/ and shall be daily taken. If it/ should not remove the cough you may/ have the satisfaction of knowing that/ the gift of it has added another to the emotions of grateful affection/ I feel for you and yet spent by/ the tears it caused. My cough is/ better today although I have not been/ able to sit up from weakness and pain/ in my side and am writing on the/ bed; may that excuse all imperfection/ My sincere thanks for your kind inquires/ as well as remedy and remembrances from/ the family to you and Emma. Did you send/ the [prudence]?
[unrecovered] Your friend/
Margaret E. Hathaway/
