My dear Emma
As you did not / come down yesterday, I conclude that you have heard from your mother and / are occupied in making a change in / your dress as she requested you to do. / You would have seen me long before / this time but I have been confined to / the house since Sunday morning with a / cough and this morning my throat troubles / me. I feel more than half sick and do / not expect “to be able to go out” all the / rest of the week. I wish very much to / see you; do come as soon as you can
PAGE 2
If the translation is corrected will you send it to me by Peyton that I / may copy it. I have been correcting / Godfrey’s speech and think it is much / improved, and in addition to this I / have translated three new verses, and / succeeded much better than I could / have expected for I had no assistance / from any one and missed your / conjuration [sic] in making sense of it / very much.
I have received a letter from / Eliza Sill in which she says she has / been very happy this winter, which / induces me to think that her father / has not been as troublesome as usual / I have not heard from your Mother / [??asters?] [^this week] as I was passing the house
PAGE 3
Friday I saw Eliza at the window [page torn] / we did see them in the street [page torn] day / which I had almost forgotten. Mrs. / Lansing is very much afflicted by the / death of her father Judge Platt.
Papa’s better, he went / to the city Hall yesterday, and has been / three hours in his office to day. Mama / has been almost sick with a sore / throat. So you see our room has been / a hospital the last three days, but / we are all recovering I hope rapidly. This note has the merit of variety at / least and I will finish it by repeating / my request that you come down to / see me as soon as possible.
Yours
Affectionately
