General Notes

Note

Background was done by Maria Martin (1796-1863 American). Maria Martin contributed to the backgrounds of at least two dozen of Audubon’s paintings for The Birds of America. In addition to botanical subjects, she painted insects with meticulous detail. Martin was the sister-in-law, and later wife, of Audubon’s close friend John Bachman.
