German A.U.V. Band, Lansing, Card PhotoDescription
This card-mounted photograph shows a band in Lansing, circa 1900. On the left "ANS" (a portion of the word "Lansing") is visible on the bass drum. Across the top of the stage is a banner featuring advertisements for Lansing businesses: J.A. Bissinger, Sullivan & Co., Louis Ehinger, Lansing Brewing Co., G. Hoelzle, Reck Bros., and the Arbeiter Society. A logo at the top of the stage includes the acronym "AABM" or "ABMA." The man seated second from right is wearing a uniform emblazoned with "AUV" on the collar. The A.U.V. Band was the Arbeiter Unterstutzungs Verein or German Workingmen’s Benevolent Association Band. Kalamazoo had an A.U.V. Band circa 1909-1910. The small ensemble pictured here could be Lansing's own A.U.V. Band. According to period issues of The State Journal, several of the business owners advertised here were active members of the Lansing Arbeiter Society.
