Description

A 3.5" yellow and green political button for George Griffiths for Michigan State Representative from the 59th district, c. 1960s. Some foxing. In the 1960s he twice ran unsuccessfully for State Representative. In 1971 he won a seat on the East Lansing City Council, later becoming Mayor in 1975. There he helped pass the nation's first sexual orientation non-discrimination policy and also reduced the penalty for possessing a small amount of marijuana to a $5 fine. Next, Ingham County elected him to Drain Commissioner for 12 years. His most notable project there was the 1980s dredging and restoration of Lake Lansing.
