Context

A Landing Ship, Medium (LSM), the USS LSM-143, was launched by Mary Edna McDonough at the Charleston Navy Yard on May 18, 1944. LSM 143 would deliver supplies to ships and bases in the Pacific during World War II, as well as participate in the landings at the Battle of Iwo Jima.
