Notes

Princess Mary, aged 17 yrs. at the time, organized the raising of public funds to provide these small gift boxes to every soldier and sailor in the armed forces of the British Empire. Officers boxes were made of silver and of brass for all others. They were typically filled with tobacco, cigarettes, a lighter, and the gift card.
