Name/Title

Anti-Gas Fan

Entry/Object ID

2003.44.01

Description

White cloth, metal and wooden anti-gas fan. The gas fan is made primarily of wood and canvas.

Use

Anti-gas fans were described at the time as "... in daily use at the Front since May 1916; principally for clearing out shell-holes, mine craters, etc., of the foul gases that always accumulate in them under shell fire. These can now be cleared in a few seconds to a few minutes, and can, therefore, be consolidated immediately after capturing instead of having to be left for hours, and sometimes for days, before they can be entered. They are made of waterproof canvas."

Notes

An anti-gas fan made of waterproof canvas stiffened with a cane or metal ribbing, with a wooden handle. It weighs less than 1 pound so it could be folded and carried in the braces behind a soldier's main pack to be available whenever needed.
