Description

A pair of woollen puttees with attached tapes. The puttee is a long narrow piece of cloth wound tightly and spirally around the ankle or lower leg and serving to provide both support and protection. In WWI puttees were wound around the leg from the ankles up to the knee. In WWII, the puttee overlapped the top of the boots and was wound around the ankle to finish overlapping the bottom cuff of the trousers. In either case, the puttee was held in place by the attached tape which was then wrapped around and secured by being tucked inside itself neatly. In addition to providing ankle support its purpose was to prevent dirt and insects from entering the top of the boots and inside the trouser legs.
