Nine members of the RMR Contingent, to the Nijmegan team, gathered for a group portrait with The Royal Montreal Regiment's camp flag after reaching their destination. The group marched from CFB Valcartier to the Port of Quebec in celebration of the 100th Anniversary of Camp Valcartier’s inauguration.
The symbolic 30 km march was to commemorate the men leaving Valcartier and heading to Europe to fight in the First World War. This march was also the culmination of 3 months of intensive buildup training and the final hurdle before the team was declared "OPERATIONALLY READY" for the Nijmegen March.
The Nijmegen Marches are an annual set of 4 x 40 km marches to be completed over 4 consecutive days. Participants must march in formation and in uniform while carrying at least 10 kg of dry weight. This difficult 160 km march takes place in and around the Dutch City of Nijmegen in the eastern area of The Netherlands. It was originally intended to showcase the skills of an infantry soldier to march long distances and fight efficiently.
Originally a means by which the Dutch infantry aimed to increase their long-distance marching and weight-carrying ability, the Nijmegen marches have evolved into an international 4 day event that draws over 40,000 civilians from 84 countries in addition to 6,000 military participants to challenge their physical and mental endurance.
