Original era manufactured, two-colour, ceramic rum jug. It stands 13 inches in height and is closed with a cork stopper. Painted into the glaze finish are the letters S.R.D (Supply Reserve Depot).
The Rum was delivered to the Canadian Expeditionary Forces in these ceramic jugs marked S.R.D.”. The soldiers often invented creative and humorous names to fit the acronym SRD such as: “Service Rum Diluted,” “Sergeants Rarely Deliver,” and “Soon Runs Dry.”
Overproof rum was distributed liberally to Canadian front-line soldiers during WW I. Stored in jars like this one, soldiers received a big gulp in the morning, and often another before going into battle. Rum helped soldiers cope with the strain of war.
Lieutenant Claude Williams, an officer of the Canadian Expeditionary Force, wrote that RUM should be "regarded more as a medicine than a beverage."
