Subject

Broncho pneumonia was interconnected with the Spanish Flu / Influenza that ravaged the world's population between February 1918 and April 1920. It infected 500 million people; or about a third of the world's population– through four successive waves. The death toll is estimated to have been somewhere around 50 million. "The majority of deaths during the influenza pandemic of 1918-1919 were not caused by the influenza virus acting alone, report researchers from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health. Instead, most victims succumbed to bacterial pneumonia following influenza virus infection. The pneumonia was caused when bacteria that normally inhabit the nose and throat invaded the lungs along a pathway created when the virus destroyed the cells that line the bronchial tubes and lungs." (Source: National Institute of Health (USA)). Military and civilian casualties in World War I are estimated to be about 40 million: of which 15 to 22 million deaths and about 23 million wounded.
