Born in September 1877 in Montreal, he went overseas in the 14th Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force. As a Lieutenant-Colonel he became the second Commanding Officer of the 14th Battalion. He was wounded in the Battle of Ypres and returned to the front after a convalescence period. Prior to the Great War he had served 20 years with the Victoria Rifles of Canada.
