A black and white portrait photo of Lieutenant-Colonel Douglas W. Ward who came to the Regiment during the difficult 1960s. He was an experienced soldier who had been connected with the Armed Forces since 1934. In WWII he was a "Can-Loan" officer with the British Army serving with the Royal Leicestershire Regiment. After the war, he commanded the Sherbrooke 12th Armoured Regiment When he settled in Montreal he was seconded to the Victoria Rifles of Canada taking a demotion to Major before becoming the RMR CO in November 1963. He lead the Regiment through the first iterations of the FLQ Crisis, the 1964 Suttie Commission which resulted in the removal of a number of Regiments, including the Victoria Rifles, from the Order of Battle, as well as guiding The Royal Montreal Regiment through its 50th Anniversary in 1964, and the associated presentation of new Regimental Colours.Photograph Details
