A Royal School of Needlework 3rd year metalwork and silk sampler. The top motifs, pomegranate, crown, fleur de lys, thistle and tudor rose were required elements and the remaining elements, the jouster and the dragon were Gillian's own design.
The magnificently stitched metal thread cross in the center was stitched onto a silk ground and has deteriorated. The whole is applied onto a cream linen ground.

This embroidery demonstrates Gillian's remarkable needlework skills, and it serves as a notable example of preserving the traditions of the past through dedicated practice and study. Gillian has added the jouster and the fire breathing dragon at the bottom, which were her own designs and not requirements of the assignment. Gillian may have had a love for folk tales, as she has another artwork in this collection depicting Don Quixote, slayer of windmills.Collection
