Pulled & Drawn, Whitework, ShipsDescription
A sampler of whitework techniques, including needleweaving, pulled and satin stitch patterns, and drawnwork in a ship motif. Cotton threads on a linen ground.Context
Pulled and drawn threads are techniques that open the foundation fabric up, each in its own way, to create lace-like textures. The drawn thread borders at the top and bottom of Gillian's ship embroidery are testaments to her needlework skill; she selected some very challenging designs to demonstrate her drawn thread borders. The borders on the sides are also drawn thread work, but on the sides she selected two different needle weaving patterns. to demonstrate her skills. The corner motifs are also done in drawn threads with the greatest skill.
For her pulled thread stitching, she chose different patterns to create the dimension and shapes of her ship. Gillian cleverly used padded satin stitch to indicate and define the waves beneath the ship, as well as to define the ships upper outline.Collection
