Giant Ophthalmoscope, Improved

Name/Title

Giant Ophthalmoscope, Improved

Entry/Object ID

Description

Improving upon older models, this ophthalmoscope has an attachment for a polaroid light, which enabled examinations through a small pupil. It features a green or red-free filter which provides a clearer contrast between structures and the surrounding tissue and allows for the examination of blood vessels. In addition, a yellow monochromatic filter allowed the practitioner to produce a warm, soft light, which is particularly helpful for patients with photophobia. The yellow filter has a protective effect by reducing UV exposure. There is also an auxiliary disc over the main disc. This instrument was one of the most useful ophthalmoscopes available to ophthalmologists at the time.
