Keys to the Motion Performance shopDescription
Keys believed to be for both the original Motion Performance Shop (formerly the Neclan Service Station at the corner of Albany and Atlantic Avenues), and the well known 598 Sunrise Hwy Baldwin NY Shop. The Sunrise building was built in 1953. Joel purchased the building in 1966 and operated out of it until the 1990's. Joel Rosen's Motion Performance started at a Sunoco service station in Brooklyn, NY in the late 1950s.
Joel Rosen changed the name of his shop from Neclan Service Station to Motion Performance in 1963 for several reasons:
1. Shift in Focus: Originally, Neclan Service Station focused on servicing average vehicles. However, Rosen's passion for high-performance vehicles and racing led him to shift his focus to performance modifications and tuning, according to Chevy Hardcore.
2."Motion" Ignition System: Rosen "borrowed" the Motion name from a company that manufactured the Motion EI-4 CD ignition system, which he used to boost horsepower in his own Corvette and other performance vehicles. This system was a key component in his performance tuning work.
3. Desire for a More Reflective Name: Rosen reportedly felt that "anything would sound better than Neclan Service Station" as it no longer accurately represented the shop's true nature and specialty.
4. Installation of a Chassis Dynamometer: The addition of a Clayton chassis dynamometer, a rare piece of equipment at the time, allowed Rosen to fine-tune engines under load, further solidifying the shop's performance focus.
The name change signaled Rosen's commitment to high-performance modifications and racing, marking a turning point in his career and the evolution of his shop.
The keys appear to be for the shop doors, security system, and office furniture. The older keys were likely for the original Motion building.Created By
