Description

Magenta cachet designed by Walter Crosby of a cowboy riding a bucking bronco encircled by “NAVY DAY / Oct 27, 1931 / U.S.S. TEXAS.” Postmarked in blue “U.S.S. TEXAS / OCT 27” aboard USS Texas (BB 35) using the blue 5-cent stamp featuring Theodore Roosevelt. Mail clerk applied the ship’s embossed seal on the cover. Additionally, this cover is addressed to “W. G. Crosby / Cover Specialist / P.O. Box 602 / San Pedro, Cal,” from the personal collection of Walter Crosby.

Context

America honored the United States Navy on Theodore Roosevelt’s birthday because he was considered the “Father of the Modern Steel Navy.” Observed annually from 1922 through 1949. Battleship Texas celebrated this Navy Day at home in San Pedro, California.
