USS Texas (BB 35) "Armistice Day" [Cover]Description
Posted aboard USS Texas on November 11, 1931 with a green cachet of a double circle, in the center of the circles is a wreath and within the wreath is the word "PAX" and date "19 / 31". On the top of the circle is "ARMISTICE DAY NOV. 11" and to the bottom of the circle in Latin words “VIGOR SECURAT PACEM.” Mailed to ”W. G. Crosby.. C.G.M. / P.O. Box 602,' / San Pedro, Calif" using the red 2-cent stamp commemorating the Sullivan Expedition. Embossed with the official USS Texas seal. This cover was mailed to Crosby, presumably for his personal collection.Context
Walter G Crosby, the cachet designer and recipient, included this note describing the cachet:
“The U.S.S. Texas cachet was designed aboard ship. This cachet is scarce as there were only about fifty sent out. Also it is very old and different form (sic) any other cachet used on Armistice day. This cachet is a double circle, in the center of the circles is a wreath and within the wreath is the word PAX meaning Peace, then to the bottom of the circle in Latin words “Vigor securat Pacem” meaning “Strength guarantee peace.”
