May 23, 1865 cover postmarked NASHUA/N.H. in a double-circle and #65 3c rose tied by fancy cancel, addressed to "Capt. Frank G. Noyes / Care Col. E. G. Beckwith, Chief Commissary of Subsistence at New Orleans, and forwarded to the care of Capt. W. W. Cantine at Mobile, Ala., and forwarded again to "General Granger's Head Quarters, Galveston, Texas.".Context
This cover was sent to Frank G. Noyes, from his hometown of Nashua, New Hampshire. Less than two weeks later, on June 2, 1865, Noyes was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and served as Chief of the Commissary Department on the Staff of General Gordon Granger in Galveston, Texas. Seventeen days later, on June 19, 1865, General Gordon Granger would issue Order No. 3, declaring former slaves to be free, now commemorated by the federal holiday, Juneteenth.Category
